Week 01

FROM 12 APRIL TO 18 APRIL.

My week 01 include:

_ Brainstorming 3 areas of interest. (Potential projects and Ideas)

_Technical areas/skills.

_Reseaches FMP project.

_Research online platforms/blogs.

Research &

General background reading:

👉 I think that research has always been a must-have step before we actually start anything.

👉 And, now we are coming to the FMP which required us to researches and reading and record a lot of information.

_Research is "systematic inquiry."

_Research is a progressive increase knowledge.

*Remember:

Find TRUSTWORTHY

Know CREDIBILITY sources.

*3 kinds of Design Research:

_Practical Design Research.

_Pure Research.

_Applied Research.

👉 My opinions:

I really found out that a lot of part of this design research is from UI-UX design which is focusing on users' experiments.

*Design research is a Critical Step in creating the best user experiment.

*4 types of research:

_Primary Research.

_Secondary Research.

_Generative or Exploratory Research.

_Evaluative Research.

👉 Because I read both the 3 and 4 articles at the same time, so it is easy to see both articles actually show 2 sides of Design Research.

This article is talking about the good sides of Design Research. (Which you can see the opposite in the next article)

*Good sides:

_Learning about people's behavior.

_Understanding and analyzing culture.

_Defining content.

_Setting focus.

👉 This article just reminded me of a lot of design research problems. And, it was just sad how research can make a designer's role being cheapening and trivializing.

👉 “It is as if anyone could follow the same steps and end up with a great design on the other end.” How sad this quote is based on the look of the business world. And it also makes me notice the relationship between customers and designers.

In business world: "Research" = "Phenomenon"

👉 It is predicting people's reactions to the decision that has not been made yet.

👉 So Research actually capable to make the decision on its own.

👉 Somehow, Research is synonymous with Science.

*Bad Sides:

_Cheapening Design (Decrease to mechanical progress)

_Trivilize the role of designers.

_Information always being quantifiable.

Final Major Projects Research:

FMP 1: THE STUDENT TRAVEL GUIDES - SARAH BRUNT

👉 This is a self negotiated brief - a part of Sarah's FMP ( This is also a Staffordshire University project)

Project Description: (This project was made before Covid-19)

The guides showcase 10 reasons why a student should be visiting each city with a range of tourism hotspots. And, it also encourages students to travel even though they are restricted to a budget.

This Project includes:

*A brief description of each area.

*How to get there?

*How much it is as well as four 'cheap eat' locations.

👉 My opinions:

_I seriously love the way the guide book being made. Like how the pages are connected through threads. It is so aesthetically and well made. I really wanted to know if she made it her own or we could just go to the printer and do that kind of pages connected with threads.

_The way a small tipped-in-page (which is inspired by a plane ticket) made me so crinkle and wanted to see the entire guidebook in real copies.

_I am really appreciated what she has shared in her project up to Behance.

FMP 2: "Tà Áo Phương Đông" - Costumes of East Asian - Văn Lang University 's Students

👉 This is a research project of the culture sphere by a group from Văn Lang university in HCM city.

Project Description:

The book is about the garish way of East Asian cultural sphere costumes history.

👉 My opinions:

_I'm not sure if this is an FMP but after reading through this project, I really love the way everything is being designed and the researches are awesome!

_The inside contents were really details and it actually makes me stunt at first look.

_Another small thing: I saw and read their digital book. But, I really hope to see the serious print of this book. I really everyone will agree with me on this point.

👉 This is a project for the Final Year Project (FYP) for BFA Visual Communication.

Project Description:

Wonder Deck is a design thinking workshop series: a community- and volunteer-based alternative to expensive school holiday programs for primary school children from low-income families. Wonder Deck aims to expand the potential of the children's organic creativity with a framework for problem-solving: the design thinking process. The empathy stage teaches them to design with understanding, and the prototyping and testing stages encourage them to think critically through the making process. For this introductory workshop, the children got a taste of design thinking through designing a gift for a friend.

The Design Deliverables:

1. Workshop Curriculum

2. Design Thinking Activity Journal

3. Workshop Promotional Flyer

4. Children's Project Showcase Posters

5. Project Description Cards

6. Workshop Completion Certificates

7. Condensed Design Thinking Activity Journal

8. Grad Show Booth Design

👉 My opinions:

This is a really detailed workshop that actually could help us to get through the progress details for the FMP. What really happens at the end of the workshop was to make an exhibition which actually makes me think about my final exhibition next semester!

Brainstorming Areas:

Home Board (Before School Board)

After a week. I keep thinking reading and seeing a lot of articles, videos, and many other crazy things. I actually just looking in details that I kind of interested in.

I have never really think clearly since the first day of this module. I believe there are a lot of ideas that waiting for me but it also really hard to see its clear look.I was confusing most of the time so I just keep some weird notes on the wall.

👉 The notes mostly are unclear. Even though, the notes still keep me on track somehow with:

_Design & History.

_Culture & Design.

_History & Culture.

_Art & Science.

And from some of the upper 3, I just keep finding more into the inside information. I just hoped that some of the notes will help me have a clearer track.

👉 This wall of notes was made at home. It actually was being inspired because the last term I saw 1810CCP also doing this in class.
