Week 02

FROM 19 APRIL TO 25 APRIL.

My week 02 include:

_ Identify what platforms we want to use? (minimal of 3).

_Expand my researches.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Design styles/trends. (Trends forecasting > Somehow mostly using for Fashion more than Design?)

๐Ÿ‘‰ Steampunk. (a style which came out of the imagination of the 90's look at science fiction/ future or futuristic? in a wooden mechanical way not like shinning or modern like today technology?)

+ Steampunk Artists/ designers research. Example: Health Robinson.

+The Honda Advertisement: "The Cog"

_Doing Blogs research and try a minimum of 3 websites.

Brainstorming (School Board):

School Board's Information

Basically, R also tells us some important facts like the four notes (Books/articles/reading, artists/designers, agencies/brands, and case studies) are our first information that we are more likely to have first than the first row (Themes and Skills/Technicals/Progresses).

๐Ÿ‘‰ So that means I will still have to reorder the board!

โ€‹

P/s: If you comparing my home board and my school board, the differences are not much.

โœ”๏ธ RESEARCH:

1/ Design Forecasting:

* Link: Forecasting: Principles and Practice

Reference: Hyndman, R.J., & Athanasopoulos, G. (2018) Forecasting: principles and practice, 2nd edition, OTexts: Melbourne, Australia. OTexts.com/fpp2. Accessed on <25 April 2021>.

Forecasting: Principles and Practice

My thought:

I did not know where to actually start in design forecasting because it is more being concern with fashion forecasting than design forecasting.

โ€‹

If you search for design forecasting online, you will only find some of the available forecastings which already being made.

โ€‹

๐Ÿ‘‰ So that why I wanted to find more based on some questions: "What is Forecasting?"; "How can we forecasting?" and "What are the methods?"

๐Ÿ‘‰ What is Forecasting?

โœ”๏ธ Forecasting is about predicting the future as accurately as possible, given all of the information available, including historical data and knowledge of any future events that might impact the forecasts.

โ€‹

โœ”๏ธ The Goals are what you would like to have happened. Goals should be linked to forecasts and plans, but this does not always occur. Too often, goals are set without any plan for how to achieve them, and no forecasts for whether they are realistic.

โ€‹

โœ”๏ธPlanning is a response to forecasts and goals. Planning involves determining the appropriate actions that are required to make your forecasts match your goals.

๐Ÿ‘‰ How can we forecast? (Basic Steps?)

Step 1: Problem definition.

Step 2: Gathering information.

Step 3: Preliminary (exploratory) analysis.

Step 4: Choosing and fitting models.

Step 5: Using and evaluating a forecasting model.

2/ Steam Punk:

My thought:

I had found a really weird website which really steampunk and it is about Steampunk too :)))) And most of my information, reading about Steampunk is on this website.

โ€‹

๐Ÿ‘‰STEAMPUNK - buy stuff - read stuff - do stuff (steam-punk.co.uk)

๐Ÿ‘‰ What is Steampunk?

_Steampunk is a subgenre of science fiction and sometimes fantasy that incorporates technology and aesthetic designs inspired by 19th-century industrial steam-powered machinery.

โ€‹

_The term steampunk's first known appearance was in 1987, though it now retroactively refers to many works of fiction created even as far back as the 1950s or 1960s.

โ€‹

_Steampunk also refers to any of the artistic styles, clothing fashions, or subcultures, that have developed from the aesthetics of steampunk fiction, Victorian-era fiction, art nouveau design, and films from the mid-20th century.

William Heath Robinson

๐Ÿ‘‰ Heath Robinson and Steampunk: (W. Heath Robinson)

โ€‹

_Heath Robinson was an artist that was recommended for me by Richard when he looked at my school board.

โ€‹

๐Ÿ‘‰So who is Heath Robinson?

_Heath Robinson (31 May 1872 – 13 September 1944) was an English cartoonist and illustrator best known for drawings of whimsically elaborate machines to achieve simple objectives.

โ€‹

_The name "Heath Robinson" became part of common parlance in the UK for complex inventions that achieved absurdly simple results following its use as services slang during the 1914–1918 First World War.

๐Ÿ‘‰ There is one thing I really curious about and actually really surprised that Heath Robinson only made his artwork real once for Ideal Home Exhibition in 1934.

โœ”๏ธ WATCHING:

๐Ÿ‘‰ Honda Advertising_"The Cog"

๐Ÿ‘‰ My thought:

_This is a really interesting advertising video from so far ago in 2003.

โ€‹

_This video was also recommended by Richard but I have already seen it. He recommended this because of the mechanical effect of Steampunk.

โ€‹

_I seriously love each detail and it's so precise in the video like how long they have done that. Really creativity and mechanical genius.

โ€‹

_Another really cool fact that this was made entirely handmade with no CGI effect. How weird when you are watching this in 2021 and the video was made in 2003. And it is still shocking me with amazing surreal effects.

โœ”๏ธ READING:

A Designer's Research Mannual
A Designer's Research Mannual

๐Ÿ‘‰ About the book:

_"Doing research can make all the difference between a great design and a good design. By engaging in competitive intelligence, customer profiling, color, and trend forecasting, etc., designers can bring something to the table that reflects a commercial value for the client beyond a well-crafted logo or brochure. Although scientific and analytical in nature, research is the basis of all good design work. This book provides a comprehensive manual for designers on what design research is, why it is necessary, how to do research, and how to apply it to design work.

โ€‹

_In today's competitive market, designers can't afford to skip this vital part of the development process. By thoroughly researching the design challenges, goals, and intended audience, designers can't help but create stronger and innovative work that delivers true value"

A Designer's Research Manual

๐Ÿ‘‰ My thought: (Before reading the book)

โ€‹

_There are 2 versions of the book but I have borrowed the right version in the library. The contents in both books are the same but they have repositioned everything. So it is actually really hard for me if Richard read the other book, I think I will ask him later.

โ€‹

_Basically, I read this book because of a series of questions about research in the design process.

โ€‹

_I also find this book because of the Industrial Investigation module which is a supplementary module for Practical Contemporary Practice to find more about "Literature View."

๐Ÿ‘‰ My thought: (After reading the book)

โ€‹

_What I took from the book was not much. What I focusing on is what I wanted to read right now not the total content in the book. So I focus on reading the "Methods of Research" (p.16) with the "Tailoring Research Methodology" (p.95)

_ "Methods of research" actually lead me to an overview of traditional research methods and a discussion of their application in the fields of graphic design. What is really surprising even though I have read about design research in general throughout some of the suggestions papers and news from Richard. But, I must admit there are a lot of parts that I have not dug deep into it.

_Personally, I think after reading the book, sometimes I will still have to open it again and look at the most important part. And, I think this book is one of the need-to-read and have in every designer's bookshelf. After two years of studying Practical Contemporary Creative, every single year I always find this book first.

Blogs Research:

๐Ÿ‘‰ Before jump right into the blogs and websites, I was trying to research and find out which one going to be the best for me and kind of starting to jump in and experiment a little bit.

โ€‹

๐Ÿ‘‰ So I found some of the suggestions I've found on google: The best free blogging platforms in 2021 | Creative Bloq

๐Ÿ‘‰ Down here are some of the websites that I have tried before actually choosing Wix as my final website to do my blog:

  1. Edublogs.

  2. WordPress. (both .com and .org)

  3. Cargo.

  4. Wix.

wordpress
edublog
cargo start
cargo
wix
wix daskboard
wix

๐Ÿ‘‰ My thought: (After experimenting with the blogs)

โ€‹

_Both Edublogs and WordPress are the same. They both used the same techniques for users to create their own websites. I just feel really hard to understand how to posted or adjust the work and posts. Even though their website's themes can looking good, I still feel uncomfortable with the fact that I will have to face something looking good but hard to manage.

โ€‹

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ‍๐Ÿ—จ๏ธ Here is the link to the Edublogs which I have experiment: Progress Journal – Just another Edublogs site

_I really like Cargo somehow based on its themes, its design, and many others benefits... But it will take me a lot of time to get near the process of succeeding with the blog design...

โ€‹

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ‍๐Ÿ—จ๏ธ About Cargo (Cargo is locked and if you want to unlock it you will have to pay for them or prove that you are a student once per year to have a code to unlock the website for everyone)

โ€‹

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ‍๐Ÿ—จ๏ธ So here are some of the blogs that I have tried:

โ€‹

๐Ÿ‘‰ In the end, I choose Wix.com to be my process journal blog. Even it is not as good as Cargo or Readymag or any others websites but it just easier to use now and to develop a better page after graduation.
