Week 07

My Week 7's tasks:

_Paper-based experiments:

+ How could you explore the methods? And How could you play with those methods?

+ What if you changed the illustration? What if you changed the graphic? (Example: Typographic?)

+ Want things to be different? And not using simple imagery like birds and birds in the cages? So does that matter if we changed or using certain fonts?

_Think about Pop-up Techniques / Paper-cut Techniques. (possible projects)

_Research into craft and craftsmanship. (Reading further)

_ Whether the project still connects with Art Therapy? And how these ideas can be used for AT later?

_Reading list. (6 books - 3 authors)

Monday Meeting:

Richard Monday 24-5-21
00:00 / 18:53

✔️ I have a meeting with Richard on Monday morning. I only recorded the meeting and not the screen record so you can actually listen up here.

👉 So you can see what I have written at the beginning of this Wk.7's blog is what Richard and I actually talked through in the meeting:

  • Paper-based experiments:

+ How could you explore the methods? And How could you play with those methods?

+ What if you changed the illustration? What if you changed the graphic? (Example: Typographic?)

+ Want things to be different? And not using simple imagery like birds and birds in the cages? So does that matter if we changed or using certain fonts?

👁️‍🗨️ NOTES: Richard also suggested "bullet-time cinematography."

  • Think about Pop-up Techniques / Paper-cut Techniques. (possible projects)

  • Research into craft and craftsmanship. (Reading further)

  • Whether the project still connects with Art Therapy? And how these ideas can be used for AT later?

👉 I also receive a book list from Richard in order to research deeply into craft and craftsmanship.

Reading list:

✔️We had 6 books and 3 authors which are:

_ "White" and "Designing Design" by Kenya Hara.

_ "Together" and "The Craftsman" by Richard Sennett.

_ "Reveinting Print: Technology and Craft in Typography" and "Graphic Design before Graphic Designers: The Printer as Designer and Craftsman: 1700-1914" by David Jury.

👉 I am really struggling in finding the PDF file of all the above books. On the other hand, I could just find out some reviews and explanations of the authors about their books.

👁️‍🗨️ NOTES: (About the books above)

_I only read and research about the book and write down some brief notes about all the books above.

Richard Sennett

✨ Together - Richard Sennett:

_ Explores how people can cooperate online, on street corners, in schools, at work, and in local politics.

_ Divided into 3 parts, the book addresses the nature of cooperation, why it has become weak, and how it could be strengthened. The author warns that we must learn the craft of cooperation if we are to make our complex society prosper, yet he reassures us that we can do this, for the capacity for cooperation is embedded in human nature.

✨ The Craftsman - Richard Sennett:

_ Philogsophically - minded inquiry into  practical activities (past/ present)

👉 Craftsmanship is in every human being.

_ History: fault lines between craftsman and artist / Markers and users/techniques and expression/practice and theory.

👉 Ways of working (past lives of craft and craftsmen)

Kenya Hara

✨ White - Kenya Hara:

_ Explore the essence of "White" origin to Japanese aesthetics - symbolizing simplicities and subtlely.

👉 "Emptiness" and "The absolute void."

👉 Related Visual Communication.

✨ Designing Design - Kenya Hara:

_ Reader reminding about the emptiness!! - Visual plus philosophical traditional of Japan.

_ Neatly summarizing Hara's philosophy and approach to design.

_The book also related to "White" as a longer version!

👉 The book has raised questions about "How to" and "What" in design.

✨  Reinventing Print: Technology and Craft in Typography- David Jury:

_ Focuses on those skills and processes which have been re-appropriated and irreverently liberated by a new generation of typographers, designers, and artists, raised with digital technology in their pockets and forever at their fingertips.

👉 The book is about traditional typographic craft? (Post-digital craft / Print design / Art and Craft / Typography)

✨ Graphic Design Before Graphic Designers: The Printer as Designer and Craftsman: 1700-1914- Richard Sennett:

_ Explore the "jobbing" printer who produced handbills, posters, catalogs, advertising, and labels in the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries.

👉 The true progenitor of graphic design rather than the "noble presses" of the Art and Crafts movements.

👉The book is about "History of Graphic Design and Typography" (advertising design, letterpress and old print...)

Paper-based experiment:

1/ Zoetrope:

✔️ About Zoetrope:

👉The name zoetrope was composed from the Greek root words ζωή zoe, "life" and τρόπος tropos, "turning" as a translation of "Wheel of Life". The term was coined by inventor William E. Lincoln.

👉 A zoetrope is one of several pre-film animation devices that produce the illusion of motion by displaying a sequence of drawings or photographs showing progressive phases of that motion.

👉 It was basically a cylindrical variation of the Phekistoscope. And, was suggested almost immediately after the Stroboscopic discs were introduced in 1833.

(👁️‍🗨️ Thoughts: I think it was really related between Phenakistoscope and Zoetrope. You can see Drew Tetz who is an graphic designer made a lot of phenakistocope disc which is also related with Zoetrope!)

✔️ Invention of Zoetrope:

_ Simon Stampfer (1833)

_ William Horner (1834)

_ Experimental photographic sequence viewers (1850s–1860s)

_ William Ensign Lincoln & Milton Bradley's Zoetrope (1865–1867)

_ James Clerk Maxwell's improved zoetrope (1868)

✔️ Types of Zoetrope:

_ Linear Zoetrope. 👉 Subways Zoetropes.

_ 3D Zoetrope.

(Thoughts: I actually thinking of making a 3D zoetrope but it will be a flat one :))))) which will make you feel weird but you can see it at the end of this week and the beginning of ne!!)

2/ Influences:

Drew Tetz Website

👁️‍🗨️ Influence: (Phenakistoscope maker)

👉 Animated Records by Drew Tetz.

👉 This is Drew Tetz. He is a graphic designer. Most of his works are creating a suite of phenakistoscopes. (which I only found out recently) He also made sculptures which reminds me a lot of 3D zoetropes (which also is something that I wanted to try too :)))) )

👉 I am really happy because I found him. His work actually has given me a lot of inspiration for what I am doing and what I want to do next.

👉 Here are some of his works:

👁️‍🗨️ NOTES:

_ Maybe you gonna asked why I am not putting him as an influencer in week 6 for Phenakistoscope inspiration? I only think because I found him too late at the stage of Wk7 after I have done the first step of my Zoetrope.

_ He gave me an idea about the "In-dream world" which is like going into somebody's mind and understand them by going through their brain. The idea of the "In-dream world" I think might repetitive with Trang's idea because I saw her keywords. But I still want to try if I can go anywhere with this idea before I give it up.

3/ Prepare Making Zoetrope:

👁️‍🗨️ I wanted to treat this paper-based experiment as a photography experiment!! So in order to do so, I went outside before Hanoi getting into another Covid-19 pandemic and took a lot of daily pictures!! Based on what I have researched on Zoetrope, I hope this will succeed.

👉 I took a lot of consecutive pictures to create motion and make it a series of moving images!! Captures several movements!!!

👉 My idea is to create a zoetrope of daily life?? I don't actually know yet but I just kept that in my mind... Like using people imagery and the environment surrounding to create it?!!

👉 Because of the complexity of the background and I only want the subject so I have to put it into Photoshop and cut the subject out of each image.

Person.png
Moving-of-Person.gif

👉 I also create a mall animated GIF of my subject walking. :)))

👉 I really enjoy looking at this...

20210527_083332505_iOS.jpg
20210527_081526414_iOS.jpg

👉 Here you can see my handmade subject has been printed out in the needy thick paper.

👉 At first, I tend to left it like its original look on the right. But, then I rethinking about it because if I left it original, it would cover a small but important part of the background.

👉 So that is why I cut out the outer leftover part.

_You can see here my handmade zoetrope first step!!!! Putting in the subject!!

👉 Here is my archetype for the zoetrope. So in order to help myself easier to set up the subject and the background into its position. You can see my digital archetype on the left and handmade on the right.

👉 Based on my archetype, you can see I choose to make 8 frames with the subjects. I choose 8 frames because the limits of material I actually own. (because of the Covid, it is harder to find the shop)

20210527_083523869_iOS.jpg

👉 Put the subject into the archetype!

_ I choose to print with the thickness paper in the printer. (250gsm) I choose it because I want everything would strong enough to stand still and keep its shape.

✔️ So you can see the left picture has shown how straight the subject can stand!!

✔️ And on the right-hand side, it is the way I attack the subject into the archetype without using any tape!! It reminds me of the padlock.

👉 I want my background to be something really weird-looking.

_ Here on the right-side is my background image. Can you realize what it is :)))) These are lots of fish's head :)))))

👉 So I gonna play with the image and see where it is going.

DSC09405.jpg

👉 Here is my final result after playing with the image. The one on the right is the first experiment. The one on the right is my second attempt experiment. You can see how I work with both in Zoetrope... One is actually fail...

2/ Making Step:

20210527_075348785_iOS.jpg
20210527_081350909_iOS.jpg

👉 This is what I prepare:

_ Printout subject, archetype, background.

_ Cardboard, formex card.

_ Rulers, pencil, paper knife.

_ Paper cutting board.

20210528_023448234_iOS.jpg

👉 Here is my introduction to the Zoetrope. What I am doing in the video was to introducing what I am doing and what I am going to do next.

👉We also have another picture showing what we have then before recording the video.

👉 Here is my video comparing the first attempt background that I fail in making it.

  • The first reason was the size of the first BG design. I was too greed with the height of the background. Like I want it to be 30 cm high but then the wide of the BG was not enough (32 cm) to create a vertical cylinder. So I have to redo the BG.

  • My fix BG was 42 cm wide and 11 cm high. And so you can see it in the video.

👉 Here is the 2 images showing my first attempt BG:

4/ Final Zoetrope:

👉 This is my video showing the final zoetrope that I have create.

_ The zoetrope was hard to see because of the unstable movement. I also think because of the spinning speed.

_ I also develop a digital flat zoetrope down here. 👇 Down here is the After Effect process making in 30s :))))

👉 You can compare both of the handmade Zoetrope up here and digital flat Zoetrope on the right-hand side.
