ONLINE VIRTUAL CLASS

Week 08

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ‍๐Ÿ—จ๏ธ NOTES: Monday, both Richard's class and Marisha's class were canceled because of an urgent meeting with the deputy dean. So we will have a tutorial later in the week.

My Week 8's tasks:

_ Finish last week 3D Zoetrope.

_ Tutorial with Richard. (Friday)

โ€‹

_ Do David's works.

โ€‹

3D Zoetrope:

โœ”๏ธAbout 3D Zoetrope:

_ 3D zoetropes apply the same principle to three-dimensional models, as already practiced by Czermak (1855) and Desvignes (1860) in predecessors of the zoetrope.

โ€‹

๐Ÿ‘‰ In 1887, Étienne-Jules Marey used a large zoetrope to animate a series of plaster models based on his Chronophotographs (I think I wanted to research and experiment with this too) of birds in flight.

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ‍๐Ÿ—จ๏ธ My Thoughts:

๐Ÿ‘‰ So my idea is basically the same as Marley's Zoetrope. I wanted to create a zoetrope with different phrases of the flight of a butterfly.

โ€‹

๐Ÿ‘‰ Actually what I choose was not 3D but more alike to faking that so I tried to make it realistic as possible.

โ€‹

๐Ÿ‘‰ What I want from this project was to experiment with strobe lighting. You will see it at the end of the experiment. I really the project will work because I did not have anything to auto-spin the zoetrope for me.

โœ”๏ธPreparation:

โ€‹

_You can see that everything has been prepare since last week. And, I only start a little bit of the work so that is why I delay everything and pushed it to this week.

โ€‹

_Here we have malleable wire, printed butterfly (using thick 4 paper in the printer), and formex cardboard (3mm).

โœ”๏ธMaking process:

_ I choose the Monarch butterfly as its meaning is a sign that I am on the right path to achieve my goals. (Follow saveourmonarchs.org)

โ€‹

_ So the first step is cutting out the butterfly.

NOTES: I was cutting out my first attempt so butterfly always has their beard right? I was struggling to cut it out or not. So you could see the images compare between the 1st and 2nd cutting attempt.

2nd Attempt

2nd Cutting Attempt

1st Attempt

1st Cutting Attempt

๐Ÿ‘‰ So after cutting out as you see in the left was my next step in making 3D Zoetrope.

โ€‹

๐Ÿ‘‰ I started to attack the malleable wire with the subject is the butterfly. You can see 2 attempts to put the wire onto the subject. One has no control for the wings and one has control for the wings.

โ€‹

_After trying both, I choose the second attempt of course!! Because of the flexibility that I can easily change following the phrases of a butterfly when flying.

โ€‹

_ Here you can compare the both ๐Ÿ‘‡

๐Ÿ‘‰ After cutting and putting wire, we came to step 3 deciding how are these butterflies gonna stand? So based on what I prepare you can see we have 3mm formex cardboard. So based on the right-hand side image you can already see the way I want the subject to stand!

โ€‹

๐Ÿ‘‰ Here are some of the first looks of the 3D Zoetrope.

โ€‹

๐Ÿ‘‰ The last step is to put everything into its place - Archetype.

20210531_203948000_iOS.jpg
20210531_204356000_iOS.jpg

๐Ÿ‘‰ My archetype has a size up to 30x30 cm ( r = 15cm). I also have to buy a bigger size formex (which the thick = 5mm) cardboard to help me cut out the real size I wanted.

โ€‹

๐Ÿ‘‰ And because I decided to use 10 butterflies which equivalent to 10 frames!! So I will have to divide by hand the circle into 10 spots to put in the butterflies.

โœ”๏ธFinish 3D Zoetrope:

โ€‹

_ So this is my 3D Zoetrope. One of my regrets about this was my subjects were not 3D but also I think it is a really good chance to experiment before decide should I continue to develop it into a real 3D zoetrope product or not.

โœ”๏ธProduct shots:

โ€‹

_ So before actually experimenting with the strobe lighting. I had layout a studio-like to have a better effect when recording the experiment.

๐Ÿ‘‰ So that why you can see some of the product shots here!!!

โœ”๏ธExperiment with Strobe lighting / Video record:

โ€‹

_ After finishing the Zoetrope as I have said at the beginning of the experiment, I wanted to experiment with Strobe lighting for this experiment! So you can see down here is my video. ๐Ÿ‘‡

Promotional Material / Structural packaging

โœจ Cut and Fold Techniques for Promotional Material - Paul Jackson

_ We have 2 versions of the book and both printed in different ways but keep the same content.

_ This book is an inspirational guide to anyone who looking for enhancing the presentation of their product or services.

๐Ÿ‘‰ The book is a collection of more than 40 attention, grabbing cut and fold designs that help to promote and advertising services and products.

โ€‹

โœจ Structural Packaging: Design your own Boxes and 3D Forms - Paul Jackson:

_ The book simply provides templates to copy, this book enables designers of all packaging types to create 3–D packaging forms that are specific to their needs rather than based on an existing design.

๐Ÿ‘‰ I think the book is a really good reference when we do a packaging project. And every designer or artist should have it on the shelf just in case.

โ€‹

โœจ Folding Techniques for Designers From Sheet to Form:

_ This is a practical handbook that gives us specially commissioned step–by–step drawings and photographs clearly explaining up to 70 folding techniques.

๐Ÿ‘‰All crease pattern drawings are available to view and download at laurenceking.com

โ€‹

Pop-up Designs / Folding Techniques

โœจ Cut and Fold Techniques for Pop-up Designs - Paul Jackson:

_ Introduction techniques for making pop-up from 1 sheet of paper.

_ Each chapter introduces us to a new technique idea or combined it with techniques from earlier chapters.

๐Ÿ‘‰ These 3-D techniques can be incorporated into any design where typography and/ or illustration are used, including mail-shots, personal publicity, invitations, business cards, and greetings cards.

Bookbinding

โœจ Bookbinding: A Comprehensive Guide to Folding, Sewing, and Binding - Franziska Morlok and Miriam Waszelewski:

_ The book gives a comprehensive reference guide to exploring bookbinding techniques in start-to-finish detail. It also explains all possible options in clear illustrations and easy-to-follow text, making it easy for artists and designers to compare and choose among them.

๐Ÿ‘‰ On the other hand, based on what I research about the book, the book only catalogs various bookbinding types of techniques and not providing how-to tutorials.

Practical Tasks and Mini Exercises:

Practical Tasks and Mini Exercises

_ After the 3 early animation devices experiment, I again wanted to check my practical tasks and mini exercises. And, because this is already week 8 and the deadline will be week 11 (25 June 2021) so I got to hurry and check it again.

_ Down here is what Richard has adjusted my practical tasks and mini exercises (image on the left) based on what I had written down (image on the right)

Wk.6 FIX
Cheese

_ My purpose still stays the same with all of the above but I just wanted to add some more specific things that I want to do. Here are my intend right now. You can see the first project really details and the other 2 again really briefly unsure...

โ€‹

(1) Phenakistoscope / Zoetrope (Wheel of Life) - Animal year chart or Astrology chart (in China / Vietnam / Japan / Korea) - A Lazer print experiment (can connect with the Cinema book or shadow plays)

โ€‹

โ€‹

  • Keywords: ANIMAL, ASTROLOGY CHART, HANDMADE, CRAFT, LASER PRINT ON WOOD, OPTICAL ILLUSION, ANIMATION, STORY-TELLING, VISUAL COMMUNICATION...

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ‍๐Ÿ—จ๏ธ Notes: I intend to develop the visual of animals based on the images of each in Vietnam's culture. (Example: like the mouse in the Dong Ho Art "Wedding of the mouse" which is one of the first things I choose when making Thaumatrope)

โ€‹

(2) Phenakistoscope - Typography experiment (this also connect with Pop-up Book and Paper engineering)

โ€‹

โ€‹

  • Keywords: HANDMADE, CRAFT, TYPOGRAPHY, OPTICAL ILLUSION...

โ€‹

(3) Pop-up book/ Cinema book (Shadow book or Shadow play)

๐Ÿ‘‰ This project actually related to the first one. The relationship between this and the first one is by making the Phenakistoscope 3D laser print, we could easily use the light shine to the phenakistoscope and having a shadow on the wall. (I also hope that if we can spin the image onto the wall with the light it could also create an optical illusion.)

โœ”๏ธSome Inspiration videos: ๐Ÿ‘‡

๐Ÿ‘‰ Because I wanted to include in my thoughts about the mini-projects and practical tasks and avoid putting too much into a week like the week 4 blog so I created my own page for these particular parts. Get to the page by press the button below. ๐Ÿ‘‡
