Submission Assignment:

Submission Assignment

1/ Portfolio & Process Journal:

_ 4200 words (Words count)

👉 Remembered and make sure that everything is being cited carefully.

👉 The Blog should be full of research, reading and also have a full range of experiments.

_ Your experimentations/ works:

👉 Could become a small portfolio (should having a selection of works and not screenshots of the blogs) in size A3 or A4 in the landscape. (remember to put in the link to your blog)

👉You also can submit your notes or sketchbooks. (Photograph and upload it to one drive)

2/ Project presentation / Proposal: Divided into 2 presentations:

✔️ 1st presentation: (3 to 4 minutes)

_ Talk about the existing blog, researches and things that you have done so far from Wk1 to Wk11.

✔️ 2nd presentation: (3 minutes)

_ Talk about the project brief and the next step.

👉 Partly conclusion of the 1st presentation.

Confirmation of Deadline Documents

👁️‍🗨️ NOTES: This is the discussion that Richard notes for us after the class right on Monday afternoon.

👉 We also have to list out to the list that we have to submit for our deadlines.

👁️‍🗨️ TO DO LIST:

_ Remembered next week submissions: PDF document / Sketchbook /  Website.

✔️ Do as many experiments as possible. (and put it onto your blogs)

✔️ Make decisions for the next project going to be? Answer these questions:

_ What is your specialist area?

_ What do you mean by craftsmanship?

_ What experiments of craftsmanship has you explore in this project?

_ Have you done enough craftsmanship experiments?

👉 Yes or no. If the answer is no, what you gonna do next to make up for that? What is missing?

👉 Include into your "Research" (for next 3 months)

_ You are going to continue this project about craftsmanship so what I am hoping to produce in the end? Obviously, You want to produce something that is highly showing the skill of my crafts?

👉 What do you think the skill of your craft might be?

👉 How do you think you might go to use it?

👁️‍🗨️ Basically, you gonna ask yourself a big question. What I am going to do if I had 2 more months? And, how I am going to spend that time? And after I have done all of that extra works, how do I use those materials?

👉 So you can come up with 2 possibilities for your project brief. And when you come back in October, hopefully, you could come up with better.

Crafts / Craftsmanship:

Crafts / Craftsmanship

✔️ READING 1: Information for Crafts/ Craftsmanship

A Theory of Craft: Function and Aesthetic Expression

1/ A Theory of Craft: Function and Aesthetic Expression_Howard Risatti:

_ What is the definition of craft? What distinguishes it from fine art and design? Howard Risatti compares handcrafted ceramics, glass, metalwork, weaving, and furniture to painting, sculpture, photography, and machine-made design from Bauhaus to the Memphis Group in A Theory of Craft. Craft, as Howard Rosatti says, is a special blending function that expresses fundamental human ideals that transcend culture, time, and location. Craft, according to Risatti, must clarify a position for itself in contemporary society; otherwise, it will be absorbed by fine art or design, and its unique perspective on the world would be lost.

👉 This is a pretty excellent, unified discussion on the separate-yet-togetherness of art and/or craft, especially in regards to our personal connection as creators and examiners of other people's work. The book helps me to get into the in-depth scholarly study that borders on obsessiveness, especially when it comes to defining terminology.

👉 Personally, when reading this book, it has actually helping me in understanding the definition of crafts and how to realize it between fine arts and design. And how can I step a step back to look closer into the connection between design and craftsmanship!

A Theory of Craft_ Function and Aestheti
The invention of craft

2/ The invention of craft_Glenn Adamson:

_ From lock-making, wood-carving, and iron-casting to fashion, architecture, and design, "The Invention of Craft" spans a wide spectrum of media. It also jumps back and forth in time, from the 18th century to the present day, highlighting how contemporary practice can be influenced by studying the modern craft in its infancy.

_ Adamson investigates the roots of modern craft and places its emergence around the Industrial Revolution. The craft was invented as industry's "other," a vital counterpoint to concepts of development and upheaval, he explains. Through separation and explanation, the magical and mysterious culture of artists was eventually conquered. This left craft with an oppositional stance, a traditional or anti-modern position.

✔️ WATCHING:

✔️ RESEARCH:

👁️‍🗨️ NOTES: All of my questions down here are myself questioning since week 8. And now, to continue all the experimentations, I tend to write down answers for all the questions that I have asked since week 8. So you can see what I have researched and what I have reading to answers down here.

* What is Craft / Craftsmanship?

_ "Craftsmanship is the quality that comes from creating with passion, care, and attention to detail. It is a quality that is honed, refined, and practised over the course of a career. It is the quality that defines the difference between a Timex and a Rolex."  (Glover, R., 2010)

_ Crafts has much meaning which richly evocative of tradition, history, and a standard of quality, the word can connote many things: skill, an art form, antidote to the machine, hobby, therapy, counterculture, deception. In the past decade alone, with the rise of a new generation, we’ve seen the field expand to include DIY, craftivism, and maker culture. Some artists and art institutions avoid the word – that’s nothing new – but other voices and audiences have stepped up to embrace and claim it. (Lovelace, J., 2018)

_ We had crafts is: UNIVERSAL / DISCIPLINE / ACTION / HERITAGE / ALL AROUND US / COMPLICATED / PROFOUND.

_ Personally, I think we all start with a pencil! There is a quote I remembered to read it somewhere when I was researching through all the module: "Being an artist is the same as being a wizard... Only instead of a wand, you use a pencil for your magic!" (N.D.) or "Everything start from a dot" (Walter Gropius)

* What do you mean by Craftsmanship?

_ Craftsmanship is what skilled artists and builders demonstrate when they create something. A well-built log house or a gorgeous hand-knit blanket both require craftsmanship to create. Craftsmanship in art means a skill or dexterity exhibited by a person for creating an artistic work with hands.

* What is Craft in Graphic Design?

_ We have know Crafts for a long time ago but what does craft mean in graphic design? As Gajendar (2017) said, "Craft is what makes design a maker’s profession, delivering exemplary artefacts and products—something tangibly defined with deep attention."

_ As a result, when it comes to software design (which includes interactions, interfaces, data formats, and so on), the craft aspect—which includes colours, fonts, alignments, timing and sequence of behaviours, the tenor of audio cues, and tone of messages—is critical to the execution of a well-formed digital experience.

The craft and logic of design

👉So, does craft still important in a digital world?

_ I found a really good link showing 6 designers explain why that craft still important in the digital world. (Link) We have: Ernst Gamperl (Wood);  Brendan Tang (Ceramics); Kristina Rothe (Paper); Celia Pym (Textiles); Patrícia Domingues (Artificial); Yoshiaki Kojiro (Glass).

_ The reasons are:

  1.  "Artisan production is always part of industrial product development."

  2.  "It explores the human experience beyond the visual and the cerebral."

  3.  “It slows everything down and keeps traditional techniques alive."

  4.  "Craft feels close to the body."

  5.  "Living in the era of digital images, the need for tangible and real materials arises."

  6.  "Craft can invest a context of regionalism and history to our convenience-based economy."

_Personally, we start everything with the craft that has been with us since the first day. It has been imprinted through our heritages and history. In some way, craft has more meaning than just what we have above.

✔️ The meaning of craft with Art Therapy:

_ I tried to connect between craft and Art Therapy in general and it is actually making sense. Art Therapy means "an integrative mental health and human services profession that enriches the lives of individuals, families, and communities through active art-making, creative process, applied psychological theory, and human experience within a psychotherapeutic relationship."

_Crafting is a stress-relieving activity that everyone needs from time to time, given the amount of stress that individuals face in today's environment. It's a powerful means of expressing and articulating your emotions since it allows you to follow your inner motivations.

👉 Crafts also necessitate time, effort, and attention, all of which can help you relax and cope with stress.

_ Doing crafts is a great way to improve your mental health. We have been reading a lot about the negative effects of social media and other aspects of the digital age we live in. It is good to know that we can counteract those negative effects with the positive ones that we can easily get by doing crafts.

✔️ The Arts and Crafts Movements:

_ We all know "Arts and Crafts" is a movement in the decorative arts that first emerged in Great Britain at the turn of the twentieth century (1890-1910) as a reaction to the poor production quality and stylist nostalgia of products in the Industrial Revolution. The style was characterized by the honest use of materials for their intrinsic qualities, craftsmanship, and interest in forms of nature.

_And we also know that the core characteristics of the Arts and Crafts movement are a belief in craftsmanship which stresses the inherent beauty of the material, the importance of nature as inspiration, and the value of simplicity, utility, and beauty. (University Libraries,2021)

👉So I come to a question Is Graphic Design is Crafts?

_ From my first year in university till now, I realise I had been an artist, a photographer, a designer. But in particular, I realise that I am also a craftsman. In the first semester, we had learned about printmaking and visual studies. Mostly what we learn in the first year are dealing with the materials from woods to papers. After the first semester, we also start to get to know the digital world as graphic designer (most of the time). And, the more time goes by, we actually changing and becoming a graphic designer from the first step as a craftsman. I think most artists and designers will always have a part of them in crafts. So that is the reason why I actually asked the question of graphic design is a craft?

_ I actually found an article on LinkedIn talking about this question: "Is graphic designer is crafts?"

👉 The article is kind of negative when reading, the author also said something he thinks "graphic design is a bit of a dirty word within the 'arts & crafts community."

_ Basically, I think there are no better answer to this question as I self-answer it. So I think graphic design can be crafts and opposite. Sometimes, crafts can be the first step for graphic design. Personally, I think they are a part of each other like a pencil with paper.

✔️ How can Crafts make difference in Graphic Design?

_

✔️ What are the craftsmanship techniques?

_ I found this website talking about "Best Craftsmanship Techniques in Contemporary Design." So just like my answers to the questions "Does Crafts Still important in a digital world?" Here I think we have the same answers with the techniques and the materials we use.

_ According to Oliveira, F. (2019), The techniques are:

  • Azulejo:  Azulejos are a type of traditional and ancient craftsmanship famous in Spain and Portugal. It entails painting tin-glazed ceramic tilework by hand, generally with blue or yellow paint. These magnificent pieces of art may be found both inside and outside, particularly in churches, palaces, schools, restaurants, pubs, hospitals, metro stations, and even regular homes.

  • Wood Carving: Wood carving by hand uses a range of methods and tools to transform a rough piece of wood into an accomplished work of art. Wood is a very light, sculptable material that can accept very fine detail. It is also easier to work with than stone. It was always a favourite of artists and masters artisans since it was a simple material to find in nature and because of its versatility.

  • Gilding: Gilding, particularly Leaf Gilding, is one of the most opulent crafting techniques. Master artists add a very thin layer of metal, generally gold, on solid objects such as metal, wood, porcelain, or stone as a decorative method. A gilt object has been gilded. The most typical surface to be gilded is metal.

  • Filigree: Filigree is a delicate style of jewellery metalwork that employs precious metals such as gold and silver to make artworks with small and detailed beads and twisted threads fused or onto an object. Its delicate nature reminds us of the texture of lace. Traditionally, this approach has been associated with high-end design and superb craftsmanship.

  • Marquetry: The ancient handicraft technique of marquetry has piqued the imagination of artists and designers through the years, and has been referred to as one of humanity's oldest arts. The term marquetry comes from the French word marqueterie. Although there isn't much proof, wood veneers were first used for ornamental purposes in ancient Egypt.

  • Embroidery: Embroidery is a craftsmanship technique that allows decorating fabric or other materials using a needle to apply thread or yarn. It may also incorporate other supplies such as pearls, beads, feathers, and crystals. In modern days, embroidery is usually be seen in fashion collections. Embroidery is available with a wide variety of thread or yarn colour.

👉 I think the main craftsmanship techniques that I going to focus on right now is "Craftsmanship Paper Techniques" So I have to go into the paper techniques again to look closer at what they actually are: Scrapbooking/ Card-Making/ Paper Flowers/ Decoupage/ Papier Mache/ Origami/ Paper Cutting/ Quilling.

✔️ READING 2:

_ Because of the papercraft engineering, paper crafts techniques, paper-cut techniques and the layered illustration and also what I have read above, I started to look back again (third time) with the 4 books by Paul Jackson in Week 8.

_ I found myself really lucky to find all the PDF files of all the books above. So if you want it too you can download it here. So each file down here will be corresponding with the images of the books above.

👉 After reading and looking through all the books above, there are two books I think that really fit with what I wanted to do right now: "CUT AND FOLD TECHNIQUES FOR POP-UP DESIGNS" and "FOLDING TECHNIQUES FOR DESIGNERS FROM SHEET TO FORM".

✔️ I think what I can experiment with now are:

_ Doing the pop-up experiment with different themes.

_ Layered Illustration or paper-cut (Like the "Folding techniques for designers" book)

Week 10's experiment:
